... He was an immature man, who could not see the greatness of the woman right before his eyes, but instead wiled away the years imagining some horrible “beast” who is about to spring upon him and bring him to ruin.
Marcher was so convinced that this terrible fate awaited him that he resolved to not “be accompanied by a lady on a tiger-hunt”, (1565) which seems like a noble sentiment – if he must suffer, why must a woman suffer with him? ... He claims to not want to drag a lady on a tiger-hunt, but then he does – for no real purpose but to have someone there to humor him about his great importance. ... He was so blind to the fact that she actually loved him – and he did not realize that this terrific burden he was destined to carry is to live so close to love, and never feel it.
