There is no one particular motivation for Iago’s despicable acts in the play, however, in my opinion, he is a moral pyromaniac who is motivated mainly by pure hatred. ...
Iago undeniably has an unquenchable thirst for power and domination, but his power can only be attained by manipulating and annihilating others. Iago sets up his victims and then watches, with evil in his eye, as his plans unfold and his targets fall into his trap.
Iago has a deep, desire to cause and view suffering. Iago may not have power in the military sense, but his power is exercised when he prepares and then implements an evil plan designed to inflict Othello and the other characters with the most extreme amounts of anguish possible.
