... Imagine using carbon paper to create thirty copies of a handout used for a class or for mass mailings for businesses – it would have taken anywhere from days to months to accomplish those tasks! Thankfully, people today print or photocopy millions of documents everyday because of a relatively simple process called xerography that has been updated over the years into the technology we know today.
The groundwork for printer technology was invented by Chester Carlson, a law student in 1938, who had become discouraged at slow mimeograph machines. This frustration led him to invent an electrostatic process that could reproduce images from one document to another in minutes.
