Old Age: The Common Fear
What is it that most people fear? Some people fear spiders while others fear heights or small spaces. These people are described as having a phobia which is an irrational, excessive and persistent fear of some thing or situation (“phobia”). What do we call people who have a general fear of old age? ... Fearing old age has become a norm within our society but what is it about old age that scares the average person? Many people form a fear of old age because they focus on the physical aging, stressful social change and death that is a part of the aging process. The reality of old age is difficult for many people to accept.
The physical element of growing old seems to scare most individuals. Many people are not willing to lose their youthful bodies to old age. ... Most women feel the need to purchase expensive products like anti-wrinkle creams and hair dyes and some women even have cosmetic surgery just to escape their fate of old age. Another physical downfall of old age is the loss of ability to do things that younger people take for granted (Adiswarananda).
