Research Assignment: Pg. 462 Q # 5: Nitric Acids in Explosives 5. a) Explosives produced with nitric acid. TNT (trinitrotoluene) C7H5N3O6 (s): Trinitrotoluene (TNT) is a hydrocarbon compound, that is in the form of yellow crystals. It is an explosive chemical and a part in many explosive mixtures. TNT is explosive because it is chemically unstable. The nitro groups are so closely bonded (by London force) that they experience a great deal of strain and then want to move away from their neighbouring groups. Therefore it doesn't take too much of an applied force to break some of the strained bonds, and the molecule then flies apart. This is known as an explosion.
