Czech studies**** October 27, 2003 Josefov, a former Jewish ghetto, contains six old synagogues, a ceremonial hall, and the melancholic)) Old Jewish Cemetery. The structures were preserved by Nazi leaders in order to create a museum for the “extinct race” after the execution of all Jews in Europe. However, now it symbolizes the achievements of the Jewish Community of Prague and The Old-New Synagogue was built in 1270 and serves as the oldest working synagogue in Europe. According to a legend, it is believed that the structure is made out of stones that were brought forth by angels, who protect it still today. Since it is still in use it does not hold an exhibition and is not part of the museum. Its architectural style is can be described as thirteenth century gothic, containing a cross shaped vault and an almenor surrounded by (richly decorated chandeliers. The structure symbolizes the Jewish peoples’ ability to withstand centuries of oppression. The Old-New Synagogue has survived through many catastrophes((. In 1689, the French attacked the Jewish Quarter, destroying many houses and synagogues. Once again in 1744 the ghetto was attacked but the synagogue still stood. Then in 1754 an attack caused part of the building to catch fire but the fire was quickly put out. The structure’s survival through the Uprisings8888 dating from the thirteenth century through world war two, represent the strength of the Jewish race. The Pinkas Synagogue, in the Jewish Quarter has a legend explaining its construction as well. The story says that some jokers threw a dead monkey into Rabbi Pinka’s home.
