How would your past experiences and interests contribute to the International House community? During my stay in Paris I decided one night to make a traditional Chinese dinner for my landlady, as she has never had a Chinese-American student stay with her before. Coincidentally, that same week, the new Chinese movie by Zhang Yimou, Hero, opened in wide-release in theatres throughout Paris. I decided that I would cook her dinner and then afterwards continue with this theme of cultural sharing and treat her to this movie on Champs Elysees. Halfway through the movie I realized that I was listening to Mandarin, reading French subtitles, and at the same time, thinking in English. This was a revelation. I found it unbelievable that in a few short weeks of living abroad that I had already incorporated a new language into my mind. Never before in my life has it ever been so clear to me how globalization and globalism was continually working—not to change the planet into a monotonous world of commercial business, but rather into a world of cultural understanding and sharing.
