The novel 1984 written by George Orwell was published in 1949. This novel is being presented in the future where a totalitarian state controls many parts of the society. The story begins in London on April 4, 1984 after an atomic world war divides the world in to three states. London is the capital of Oceania that is run by INGSOC also known as English Socialism. The party that rules Oceania is divided into two sections, The Inner Party and The Outer Party who are known as “Rich” and the “middle class”. “ The Proles” or “ The Proletariat” are a third group of people who are considered to be Poor, or in other words animals. By changing the motive of the government into three elusively ironic statements “ War is peace, Freedom is slavery, Ignorance is Strength” Orwell is able to convey the reality of INGSOC’s goals. All three of the above slogans are oxymoron’s but appear to make scene to the reader after progressing through the book. “War is peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength” are all in there own ways powerful, even though all three come across as oxymoron’s, each one makes sense.
