The Bishop is aware that Mark is dying, yet Mark does not know. The Bishop feels that Mark will learn more about life and what is important in life in the little time he has left, living with the Indians. Mark begins his journey to the village, filled with words of wisdom from his retired predecessor, Caleb. His companion Jim an Indian boy returning to his village, assists Mark on the trip, and eventually becomes a good friend.
