Can Emma Bovary’s behavior be linked to behavior of women today in the twentieth century? ... In the story Madame Bovary by Gostave Flaubert the character known as Emma Bovary behaves in such a way that it is appalling. ... We will be discussing the differences between Emma Bovary, which took place in the 1800’s and a woman in the present time (twenty-first century), which will remain nameless but I will refer to as Laura and their reasons behind their actions.
The differences between Emma Bovary and Laura are quite fascinating in fact the similarities are uncanny. Both of these women grew up in a Catholic upbringing, Emma at the age of “thirteen [,] her father took her to town to place her in a convent”(Madame Bovary, 30), felt the pressures of her religion and what a woman should be. ... This man intrigued Laura, who never met anyone from the armed services; because of this Laura befriended him. ... Much like Laura, when Emma met Charles Bovary (husband to be) she used him for away out, an escape from the life that she thought was unbecoming of her and
“…regarded herself as extremely disillusioned, a women with nothing more to learn and no more emotions to experience. ... ”(Madame Bovary, 34).
After marring Charles, Emma soon realized that the marriage was a mistake she tried to make Charles into someone he was not. When a young stable boy came in with gangrene on one of his legs (clubfoot), Emma hoping that if Charles did the operation and if it was a success, it “would enhance his reputation and add to his fortune! ... ”(Madame bovary, 150). ... Looking back at the years that passed, already having 2 kids and nothing else to show she started to get depressed misinterpreting kindness from friends she soon forgot about what she had and just thought about what she can get. ... The similarities between Laura and Emma are unmistaken Laura; cheating on her husband with a close friend Louie can be compared to Leon from Madame Bovary and then soon cheats again with her landlord can also be compared to Rodolphe Boulanger from Madame Bovary.
