was a famous French writer, a witty philosopher, and the leader of the Enlightenment. His plays and essays were famous for bringing skepticism amongst the people towards the Church and government. This French philosopher changed the way society saw the Church and monarchy, leading to the French Revolution and Enlightenment, offering his beliefs and criticism along the way. François-Marie Arouet was born on November 21 in 1694 to a high middle-class family. He was particularly small and frail, possibly due to a premature birth. Doctors feared he wouldn’t make it, but surprisingly he pulled through. Despite living ill throughout most of his life, he managed to survive until the age of 84. Little can be said about his mother, Marguerite Daumard, who died when François was 10 years old and his two older siblings. He deeply cared for his sister, Marguerite-Catherine who died also at a young age, but he had almost no compassion for his brother Armand.
