A traditional oral ballad has several dominant characteristics. It is a flowing ballad with its sounds and beats. The Ballad of Birmingham is a written ballad but resembles an oral ballad by mans of its being dramatic in its dialogue, the ominous foreshadowing of its tragedy, the ballads irony, and the sudden twist of fate. The rhyme schemes of this ballad also represent that of a traditional by its abcb pattern. In this essay I will I will examine more in depth these ways that this ballad represents an oral ballad. ... To even be mentioning such vulgarity this early in the ballad gives you a painting of this violence that is going on, not in their directness, by the hostility is near, and painted as you read. ... From the beginning of the ballad to the right before the tragedy the mother is telling her child she can’t go to the march because it is unsafe, and that it is no place for a child.
