In his “Allegory of the Cave,” Plato describes someone who is imprisoned in a cave. He is chained and forced to look at a wall, where a fire behind him casts shadows. As time passes, his vision becomes so accustomed to these shadows that they form his reality. When escapes from the cave, he “is unable to see because…having turned to darkness to the day is dazzled by excess light.” Eventually, after a long period of time, his vision reverts back to normal, and he is able to see reality as it really is. This story illustrates Oedipus Rex’s journey to truth. Oedipus, who was once “blinded” from the truth and caught in a false reality, goes through a journey, literally and figuratively, and finally discovers the truth.
