When meeting with fellow Directors of Communications, we discussed many relevant details as to how the job should be handled and carried out. This job revolves around what is going on in the news on any particular day. We need to know how to deal with the Presidential administration as well as the public and the press. We mainly discussed the three different approaches to the role of the Director of Communications. We discussed the aspect in which the Director of Communications will be dealing with the press. The Press Secretary’s main job is dealing with the press. In some administrations, the Director of Communications also takes a large role in talking to the press and dealing with the public and poles and what not. We constantly need to be dealing with what the public thinks and ways to present it to the press and the public so we can keep their support and bolster the administration. We need to be able to look at what the public supports and be able to manipulate what the administration does in order to get the job done and keep the support of the nation. When taking an approach to the job of Director of Communications, we felt that one of our most valuable tools will be polls in order know what the public believes and what is important at that point in time. If we keep up on the polls not only will we know what the public expects of us, we will know if the public feels we are doing a good job and what we can do to please them. I have pulled out an example of a poll we will be looking at in order to help ourselves on the Iraqi situation. Basically a poll like this one is asking the public what they think we should do. We will discuss a poll like this with the rest of the administration and then determine our course of action on a situation like this one. The Gallup Poll. Latest: Oct. 14-17, 2002. N=515 adults nationwide. MoE ± 5. "Would you favor or oppose invading Iraq with U.S. ground troops in an attempt to remove Saddam Hussein from power?" Favor Oppose No Opinion % % % 10/14-17/02 56 37 7 10/3-6/02 53 40 7 9/20-22/02 57 38 5 As we can see by a poll like this one, we can tell whether or not the public supports certain issues and what they believe we should to confront a situation. If we believe something should be done that the public does not necessarily support, we as Director’s of Communications will have to find a way to manipulate the press and the public into supporting our issues and believe in what we need to.
