A Comparison of Hemingway And Connell

Traumatic events often affect a person in many different ways. In Ernest Hemingway’s short story, “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber,” the protagonist of the story, Francis Macomber, underwent such an event. The story focuses on Macomber and his wife’s adventures while on safari. During the safari, Macomber has an embarrassing experience that was witnessed by both his wife and their guide. This embarrassed Macomber enough that it affected his psyche. Macomber’s personality, attitude, and feelings about his wife were all altered. Macomber’s brief history as told in the story describes him as a cheerful man who generally was personable to everyone. After the embarrassment with the lion, he seems to start being a little more downtrodden with everyone. Even after being insulted by Wilson, Macomber keeps apologizing, “I’m sorry, I didn’t realize that. There are a lot of things that I don’t know.” Those words seem uncharacteristic of a proud, wealthy American man. Macomber continues to try to joke with his wife, but her reaction and contempt for him only do him harm and he becomes tenser.
