Among public figures in Taiwan, there is a personality type characterized by an insatiable hunger for the limelight and a wide range of emotional swings. Quite commonly, such individuals are given to dressing up in a sexy, seductive, eye-catching style. When they speak, it is in a pretentious, affected manner, with startling rhetoric delivered in a melodramatic tone of voice. They like to gesticulate with an almost coquettish, flirtatious body language, their every word and action smacking of calculated stage acting, frequently putting on dumbfounding news shows. Their moods fluctuate from joy to fury with no constancy, and they have a propensity for inflammatory, provocative behavior. General features of the "hysterical" or "histrionic" personality. All of this they do in order to win others' attention. Although it is applause and adulation that they seek, even if their performances instead elicit curses, ridicule and boos, to them, this is better than meeting with cool indifference. For once they have ceased being the center of public attention, they lose their zest for life, plummeting into a state of depression often accompanied by boozing, drug abuse and/or other self-destructive behavior. In the psychological jargon, this dysfunctional type of personality is referred to as a "hysterical" or "histrionic" (overemotional, theatrical, affected) personality. In their contacts with persons of elevated status, such persons often emote an air of instant intimacy and bonhomie; and they are given to dropping names and exaggerating how close they are to such bigwigs.
