Both poems, although concerning two different wars: - The Send Off concerning world war one and the other, The Drum, most probably concerns the American revolutionary war, present ideas about slaughter and sacrifice. Sacrifice can be seen in various forms, as it could be the soldiers sacrificing their own lives to protect their country, or the country sacrificing the soldiers for the purpose of the war, where in all forms somebody dies for a greater cause. Although the term ‘ sacrifice’ is commonly used as a religious word, there is certainly no hint of religion being the driving reason behind the slaughter in these poems. Ideas of slaughter and sacrifice are presented in the language, structure, and form. ... However, when reading the line, as well as those surrounding “and mangles limbs and dying groans,”, the reader can feel this coming true for all the men that you can feel marching away in the rhythm; an idea of pure slaughter. ... However, its point is still made about slaughter, which is summed up in the line “a few, a few, too few for drums and yells”. ... It also goes further to state the effects of the slaughter, such as in “and widow’s tears, and orphan’s moans”.
