The function it provides ranges from data processing, file management, to entertainment, network computing and communication. PC is changing the way people learn, work, communication and play. „« Value-created activity Companies in PC industry may involve in different segments. We can classify them to two categories: PC manufacturer and PC assembler. For example, IBM is a vertically integrated organization, building its own chips, circuit boards, disk drivers, etc, while Dell outsources its manufacturing to subcontractors and then assemble the components in its own factories. Depending upon the industry segment, we can group PC industry value chain into three parts, product innovation, operations, and customer relationships. Product innovation includes R&D, design and new product introduction. Operation includes process engineering, manufacturing, and logistics. Customer relations include marketing, sales, and customer service.
