Unconventional Women of the 19th Century
I have chosen to compare and contrast Louise Mallard in “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin and the narrator of “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman” because both of these authors are women who wrote during the Victorian Era. A period when women were submissive and content to dedicate themselves only to the well-being of the family and their marriage. Chopin and Gilman are similar in that they both believed in equality and independence for women and sought to help other women through their writings. ... Both of these short stories are based on women who lived during a time when they stood in the shadows of their husband and accepted their fate. It appears as if these two women writers decided to fight back against the bias they endured with words through their writings. ... Both of these women are shown to have some type of health problem. ...
These two characters are very much alike in the way that society viewed them as delicate, insecure and weak women. ...
As the story’s unfold both women spend a great deal of time upstairs in their bedroom. ...
“The Story of an Hour” and “The Yellow Wall-Paper” portray both women as prisoners. ...
Both of the women characters undergo a transformation that changes the course of the story. ... Both stories focus on the influence the husbands had over the women, both women had feelings of entrapment, and both felt defeat.
