THE ANSWER
The Conflict:
One of the biggest problems in the retail industry today is competition between small and large firms. It is almost impossible for small and medium sized retailers to compete with the industry giants such as Wal-Mart. Even some of the largest, most profitable department stores are struggling to compete with Wal-Mart’s “Every Day Low Prices.” Small retailers are either forced out of business or must merge with other companies. This problem affects not only current retailers in the industry, but potential businesses as well. Competition is restricted, because no other retailer can possibly offer the same prices and vast quantity of merchandise as Wal-Mart can. ...
The Importance of Small Retailers:
Consumers who shop at Wal-Mart are concerned with value and convenience rather than service or product quality. ... What many consumers fail to realize is that without the presence of those small retailers, they lack choice and selection. The demise of small retailers means fewer outlets for consumers to buy from, and limits the choices and selection for shoppers.
