The Key, written by Junichiro Tanizaki, is a story of middle-aged college professor and his sex-loving adulteress wife¡¯s dying marriage, and told in the form of parallel diaries. The reason why Tanizaki titled this novel as The Key is the key goes though everywhere in the novel, even in people¡¯s mind. The Key here is not only a key of diary, also has many other meaning, playing a very important role. Firstly, The Key represents secrets, everyone has a key in the heart, and all of them have their own secrets. Secondly, the key represents sexual life. Sexual life can be a key in a couple relationships. Thirdly, Tanizaki implies about secrets and sex though the key from beginning till the end. Finally, everyone in the novel can be a key, everyone is a key in this four-people-relationship.

Before, the husband always hides the key of diary in a private place even thought there are nothing his wife cannot know, but he does not want Ikuko to read his diary. In terms of Ikuko¡¯s words, ¡° Apparently, he doesn¡¯t feel safe unless he takes the trouble to lock it away and hide the key¡±(p10). ... Then he drops the key on the floor in order to make a chance for Ikuko. He knows Ikuko will find the key and understand what his real meaning by dropping the key. Then when Ikuko cleans the room, she finds the key and thinks ¡°why should he have dropped the key in a place like that? ... Perhaps he realizes I¡¯d refuse if he asked me to, so he¡¯s telling me you can read it in private¡ªhere¡¯s the key¡±(p10). Ikuko guesses what her husband real meaning by dropping the key, it seems like she¡¯s already understood. ... Directly, the key means their sexual life secrets, when the husband drops the key on the floor, the sexual life between them is not a secret anymore. On March 7, Ikuko finds the key of her husband¡¯s diary again beside the bookshelf and finds the diary sealed with tape, just some as her. ... The husband tells Ikuko what he thinks of their sexual life though the key indirectly. Also ¡®the key¡¯ arouses Ikuko to begin writing diary and want her husband read it. Even though the key seems like invisible, it is a bridge of the sexual relations of Ikuko and her husband.
