Legal Issues: In creating a bill that resembled a Canadian one dollar bill and using an official one dollar note to use as the design, did Avery, Jane and Shasta violate section 457 of the criminal code? Legal Evaluation: Avery, a student of Alexander Mackenzie High School created an original but partly copied bill for his school paper. There were significant differences between his bill, and the one dollar bill of Canada. In the Literal approach to determine the intent of the legislation, under section 457 subsection 2a, Avery “designed” a bill which had a resemblance or “likeness” to the one dollar bill in Canadian currency. He is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction. Under subsection 2 the document was planned to be reproduced and distributed, and recounting subsection 3b Avery had a complete word (Jillion) plus he had illustrated his Vice-Principal Ms.
