Norma was fired simply because she supported the creation of a union in the mill she worked at. The article talks about how the success of groups that withheld their labour services in order to protest poor wages and working conditions were limited because the government made them illegal; and had the leaders arrested, as they did Norma after she got everyone to turn off their machines at the mill, in response to her sign that she held up.
