“We must all be alike. Not everyone born free and equal, ,as the constitution says, but everyone made equal... A book is a loaded gun in the house next door. Burn it. Take the shot from the weapon. Breach man’s body.” (pg58) Captain Beatty speaks these lines when he explains the history of firemen to Montag. Beatty’s speech to Montag is very ironic. He defends the equality of society while still remaining to educate himself, and denounce the use of books as a weapon, yet he freely uses his them that way himself. Because of these ambiguities, Beatty remains to be the most complex character in the novel. He uses his book sense or his “loaded gun” to manipulate Montag. It is not known why Beatty uses his book sense to influence Montag. Could it be that he is trying to gain legal access of books through his position of authority, or his lack of faith in books. Beatty is informing Montag that he believes in conformity, and that books are like an accident waiting to happen. Over the past few years, I have tried to make myself believe that books are nothing but trouble. At times, I wish I lived in a society where books were known as a danger. The truth is, that books allow people to flee from conformity. Conformity is uninspiring. To be like everyone else is lame. Everyone is different, and has their own personality. Individuality out weighs conformity any day. I love to read about things that are unique. I have learned that by reading, you can out smart your component, simply because you have a wider range of knowledge than they do. Unlike what Beatty thinks, reading is the only way to excel in life.
