The sport of horse riding is a complex sport; there are many different events, styles and levels that someone can ride at, for example; eventing, showjumping, showing, racing, side-saddle, western, English all can be ridden at recreational to advanced level. Each one of these has different performance demands but will be tackled from a general perspective. Horse riding demands psychological, physiological, technical and tactical understanding and enforcement. To improve these demands that are so important to been successful in the sport, it is important to be able to analysis a riding performance and then use the information to its full potential in order to fulfill the riders potential. There are different ways of analysing a performance that will be discussed later.

Horse riding is a dangerous sport, and the repercussions of knowing that is that it can have psychological implications on the rider, which can then affect the performance. Anne Kursinski in A sport Psychology workbook for riders says " a showjumping course demands skillful analysis, strategic thinking, quick responses and effective riding" if the rider is nervous and thinking negatively about the phase and what may happen whilst they are riding, then theyll be unable to think strategically or effectively, and concentrate on the more important points. ... Unable to stay calm and relaxed whilst on a horse will show through to the performance, as any tension in the rider a horse will pick and then they will also become tense, this will seriously effect the performance in an event such as showing or dressage where the horse and rider need to be supple and relaxed.
