‘Romeo and Juliet’, must be the greatest love story ever written, and when the film maker Baz Lurhman took on the roll of rewriting this story, while adding a theme of modern culture, he was taking a huge risk. ...
The first scene of the film is set in a petrol station, where Baz Lurhman proves that he is a great filmmaker by telling the story without words, the way he did this is by using quick time, slow motion, wide shot, and close up edits, to portray how different the two names (Montague & Capulet) are to each other. ...
In the masquerade ball scene, at the Capulet Mansion, Baz Lurhman tells the story of love and despair, while adding his contribution of drugs and corruption, all in a matter of minutes, he does all this using symbolism, sound effects and edits. During the first part of the scene, Romeo is shown taking a pill, (ecstasy) given to him by Mercutio, then, Baz Lurhman uses a line from the suicide scene in the original script, which is “thine drugs are quick.” After this, the effects of the drugs are shown on Romeo, using jump cuts, quick time, and slow motion edits to give a feel of dazed emotion. Some of the images now are taken from Romeo’s view point, some of these portray the corrupt nature of the Capulet family, for example, Juliet’s father, is shown kissing a young beautiful girl, while Juliet’s mother is shown kissing Tybalt, her nephew. The other images in this part of the scene show the fact that Romeo is also hallucinating, there’s jump cuts of the same person in two places at once and people doing things that they’re not actually doing.
