Early Canada was a vast sparsely inhabited wilderness, and people had little sense of a collective identity. The nationhood of the Europeans that settled here was based on the existence of a community sharing a common language. When massive numbers of immigrants arrived in Canada a wide diversification of languages and cultures developed, and Canada adopted the self-image of a “cultural mosaic”. This has remained an accurate description of Canada through the years. Today, Canada is still a multicultural society, full of people of many different ethnicities from many different backgrounds. Bilingualism and multiculturalism are very important to our national identity. All the different cultural values and traditions of the people of Canada make up our cultural mosaic. Our diversification makes us different from any other country.
