Moreover, later on, Peggy, a soldier who symbolizes the war, comes to kill the rabbits and Robert tries to defend them. ... In this quote, the rabbits again evoke nature as well as the early Robert’s innate state of mind, which is sinless and untainted by the war values, which are violence and destruction. However, the fact that he can’t keep alive the rabbits foretell that he will eventually be transformed by the war, for Peggy, characterizing the war values, is going to kill the rabbits, representing Robert’s innocence and purity.
