The Relationship Between The United States and Cuba Throughout The Pan American Games
Sports became more institutionalized in the late eighteenth century, which resulted in more organized, international events. The largest of these came about with the re-discovery by Baron Pierre de Coubertin of the Olympic games that were held two thousand years ago. ... Just like the Olympics, the Pan American games were intended to strengthen and tighten the bonds of friendship between a large number of people (Ince, 66). Unfortunately these games have also suffered from the intrusion of political conflicts. ... This paper will examine the relationship between the United States and Cuba through their antagonistic history, with particular focus on the Pan American Games. ... Soon after, according to the Encyclopedia web site, ˇ°US investment in Cuban enterprises increased, and plantations, refineries, railroads, and factories passed to American ownershipˇ±(Encyclopedia, Cuba: History). ... Also, as sports are used as political diplomacy, these conflicts can be also seen in the Pan American games.
Conflicts at the Pan American Games
Although both countries had negative images of each other, they are not readily apparent at the games. ... Consequently, the first three games including Buenos Aires(1951), Mexico City(1955), and Chicago(1959) were held without any incidents. Castro took over power in La Havana when the third game was held in 1959; however, the game was incident free because Castro was probably too busy to worry about politicizing the games. ... Moreover, in the 1963 Sao Paulo games Cuba was expelled from the games because the Cubans begun using sports to promote their political agenda. The governing body believed of the Cuban government had corrupted the original purpose of the Pan American Games; politics have to be banned from sports to maintain the integrity of non-partisan, amateur competition.
