The Electoral System
In the English-speaking Caribbean, general elections are held regularly (every 4 to 5 years). ... Problems have risen both over the nature of the electoral system and its practical administration. ... In some countries, there have been allegations of electoral fraud, such as the stuffing of ballot boxes and inaccurate voter lists.
Electoral systems in the Caribbean region are mainly of the first-past-the post type. Under this system the country is divided into a number of constituencies from which a single representative, the one gaining the highest number of votes, or being the sole candidate, is elected. In the Anglo-Caribbean countries (except Guyana), the first-past-the-post system is used to elect the members of parliament, a majority of whom nominate the Prime Minister.
The first-past-the post system, though most widely used, has also been widely criticized.
