Rates of reaction Aim: To see the effect of increased concentration on reaction rate. Experiment: Calcium Carbonate + Hydrochloric acid ® Calcium Chloride + Water + Carbon dioxide Or: CaC03 + 2HCl ® CaCl2 +H2o + C02 Prediction: I predict that the higher the concentration of the Hydrochloric acid, the faster the Carbon Dioxide will be given off (the rate of reaction will increase) I think this because when the concentration of an acid is higher there are more actual particles of acid present in the volume of acid, so they are more likely to collide with the Calcium Carbonate, so the Carbon dioxide will given off quicker. Therefore the rate of reaction will be increased. However, because I will be doing all of my experiments on different days, the temperature in the room is likely to be different. This could be a problem because when particles of acid are heated up, they are given more energy, and therefore collide more frequently and the whole reaction would take place quicker than it would do if the room were colder. I will deal with this by taking the temperature of the room, and if it is any warmer than before then I will move to somewhere cooler e.g. near the window. I predict that if I carried the experiment on for longer than 3 minutes, I would eventually end up with the same amount of Carbon dioxide gas for each reaction that took place, as the same amount of marble is being used each time. Although the acid strengths are different, I think that they would all let off the same amount of C02 if they were left to finish.
