American Beauty

American Beauty Within the film “American Beauty”, there are many messages and values shown through keyshots and events. Family is a key factor within “American Beauty”, with a variety of typical representations. The Burhams come across as a “show family” with the mum, dad and daughter living in the perfect house, in the perfect neighborhood. However, we soon see that the family are quite disfunctional, e.g. lack of respect for each other seen at the dinner table when Lester tries to establish conversation with Jane, and also the lack of communication between Lester and Carolyn showing that their marriage is desolate. We also see that Carolyn and Jane do not have the typical mother-daughter relationship and don’t appear as close, despite the fact that Carolyn believes that the issues with Jane just involve Lester. The family are substantially well off and have a nice house in what looks like a nice neighborhood.
