The Scarlet Letter shares a quality with nearly all other fiction. An evil lurks in the story. In The Scarlet Letter the gBlack Manh is this evil. The gBlack Manh supposedly lives in the forest surrounding the colony. He carries a black book and requests the signatures of those souls that come near so he may own them. gHow he haunts this forest, and carries the book with him, a big, heavy book, with iron clasps; and how this ugly Black Man offers his book and an iron pen to everybody that meets him here among the trees; and they are to write their names with their own blood. And then he sets his mark on their bosoms! Didst thou ever meet the Black Man, mother?h (Hawthorne 167). The gBlack Manh is associated with at least three characters in the story. Roger Chillingworth is the most obvious. Reverend Dimmesdale also has evil qualities. Finally, Pearl, Hester Prynnefs daughter, may be considered gevilh in certain ways.
