The text defines and describes five (5) different models of marital and family types (Fitzpatrick, Bernstien, Kantor & Lehr, Reiss, and Olson). Analyzing my family in light of different models of marital and family types, I am able to place my family into specific categories described by Fitzpatrick, Bernstein, and Reiss. For Fitzpatrick’s model of marital types - in which he identifies three basic types of marital relationships, Traditionals, Independents, and Separates - my parents’ marriage would fit most accurately with the Traditional couples. ...
In reference to the Bernstein model of family types, I would classify our family as person-oriented rather than positional oriented. Rather than assigning each member of our family a specific, permanent role and then expecting members to meet the expectations that go along with their roles, our family adapts our roles to the needs and attitudes of the members.
