... ” Thomas Gray had made
this statement about Nat Turner over 100 years ago that still holds true about the readers
that learn about him today. Nat Turner was a special person during the time that he lived
as a slave in the early 1800’s. ... In Nat Turner’s Fierce Rebellion,
Stephen Oates writes a critical biography about this man’s incredible slave life and what
helped him get though it and finally revolt during the last days of his life. It was due to
Nat Turner’s religious fanaticism that his leadership failed to free him and the slaves that
followed him as well.
The religious views that carried Nat throughout his life started at his childhood
when he was somehow able to read and write with very little guidance. ... Nat Turner
believed that God was trying to speak to him though various ways and this religious
revival had it’s advantages and disadvantages. The positive side was that religion was the
only thing that kept Nat alive during his horrible slave life. ... Yet all of Nat’s Turner’s
were not as cruel or harsh on Nat because they had a bit of trust in him. As long as Nat
did his work thoroughly he would not get in trouble. ...
The negative side to Nat Turner’s religious revivals was that it made him think too
much and that can produce disastrous results. Nat believed himself to be a prophet and
that is what many other slaves were led to believe as well.
