Should prostitution be legalized or not?
What is prostitution? ¡§Prostitution is taken to mean the exchange of money for sex-use value for exchange value (as in all forms of work)¡¨ (Scambler 10). In contemporary society, prostitution offers some women a good enough standard of income for shorter working hours and some degree of autonomy and independence for those working for themselves. ... Prostitution is also a kind of work and that prostitutes should have the same rights and liberties as other workers. Although prostitution is a crime against morality, it should be legalized in order to provide equal opportunity and rights to all individuals.
In American society, adults should have the right as human beings to sell their bodies as they choose as long as they do not harm others. People should be able to do whatever to their own bodies as what they deem acceptable. Prostitution is one of the oldest professions, and illegalizing prostitution does not eliminate prostitution from happening because it exists anyway underground. Government¡¦s closure of brothels is not an effective way of stopping prostitution from happening. It is true that prostitution promotes violence and the spread of diseases. Thus, prostitution is needed to be regulated but not illegalized because it will not help anyway. In order to regulate prostitution to some extend, it needs to be legalized first. The legalization of prostitution does not encourage people to practice it but to manage prostitution in order to minimize the spread of contagious diseases such as HIV/AIDS. ... However, it should not be the states business to tell a person what he or she can or cannot do with his or her body unless there is some violation of the rights of another individual.
