SUMMER 2002 ESSAY CONTEST WINNER THE MIRACULOUS AND THE MAGICAL: TRAVELING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF J.B. PRIESTLEY By Anne McDonough Across the street from the subterranean Berlin memorial that marks the Nazi book burning of 1933¡ªthe haunting construction of empty bookcases designed to fit all of the books torched on that night¡ªa small book sale was set up outside the gates of Humboldt University. Amidst the gray textbooks and dog-eared poetry tomes piled on the lone table offering English books, the yellowjacket cover of J.B. Priestley¡¯s Bright Day caught my eye. It was drizzling, and I handed over four euros without reading the back. Priestley¡¯s tale of a screenwriter struggling to finish his latest work occupied prime real estate in my small pack.
