The film Far and Away centers around two main characters. ... The film starts off in Ireland when Joseph=s father is accidently killed by the rich upper class tax collectors, then during his funeral they come again hoping to collect money. ... Although the story is an old one, this film still manages to work and put a new twist on it. ... So on historical terms this film was fairly accurate.
The music in the film played a big role. Like most films today a majority of the music was nondiegetic. Nondiegetic music set the mood throughout the entire movie. The first part of the movie was set in Ireland and during that part we heard music with a dominate Irish background. As the film progressed and moved to America we started to hear music with a more American classical feel. Some other examples of the power of music for changing the mood of the film was during Joseph=s dad=s funeral. The music was sad and set the depressive mood for that part of the film. In contrast during the race for land the music was upbeat and gave a sense of anticipation as the characters rushed for that prime piece of land. There were also flashbacks that Joseph had of Shannon, during those moments music that had a slow tempo was used to show how he missed her.
