Greece's economy has entered a period of renaissance after two decades of economic gloom, thanks to Yannos Papantoniou who took over the economic helm as the country's Minister of National Economy and Finance five years ago and performed what has been called a Greek miracle. The economic picture is rather remarkable. Growth, at about 3.5 percent, is quite strong for the fourth consecutive year. That is stronger than most other European countries. Inflation is going down to 2 percent. The economic shortage is just 1.7 percent of the GDP, down from 13.9 percent. So the improvement is quite stunning. It is planned to apply for membership of the European and Monetary Union..
