A deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot that develops in a deep vein. The clot can partially or completely block circulation. The blood clot usually happens in the lower extremities. But can take place in the upper extremities and pelvis but they are less likely to happen. The deep veins are surrounded by powerful muscles that contract to force blood back to the heart. The valves of the leg veins are more vulnerable to disease secondary to the effects of venous thrombosis, increased venous pressure from gravity, increased intrabominal pressure, and/or venous obstruction.
