Hinduism The Aryans are thought to come into the land of India at around 2000B.C.E. from the northwest. This is a time that the Harappa culture was around but was already in the process of decaying as the Aryans were entering. They had a social system of three classes: priests, warriors, and commoners. Their religion consisted of the worship of a male dominated number of gods who they felt controlled the forces of nature. Today many of the gods that the Aryans worshipped is no longer in practice but the use of fire and ancient chants by a pious class still continue. Sacred chants which Aryan priests knew from memory were used at ceremonies to worship the gods. These chants were very important and for that reason they were passed down from father to son. The reason theses chants were important is because they are mostly what the Vedas, the Aryans earliest literature, contain. The name Vedas means “knowledge” or “sacred lore”.
