NUTRITION FOR OLDER ADULTS “I’m not hungry”; “I don’t want anything to drink”. These are some phrases that you tend to hear around older adults. As people get older they lose there sense of thirst. Older people need 8, 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day to prevent constipation and dehydration. Older individuals are less active and require less food. But they do require nutrients like calcium and vitamins to keep bones strong, and folic acid to retain mental acuity and reduce heart disease. You should eat dark, leafy greens like spinach, and orange and yellow veggies and sweet potatoes that are more rich vitamins A and C in folic acid. You should eat colorful fruit like strawberries and mangos. It is especially important for older people to use oils and sweets sparingly. They should limit their intake of desserts and snacks that have a lot of calories but few nutrients. Unlike younger people, older people need more water then food. Extra vitamin and calcium may keep bones from thinning. It is recommended that you use low-fat dairy products like milk.
