Lord of the Flies General Knowledge – Value: 15 marks 1.Identify one of the first things the boys had to do upon landing on the island. Answer. The boys had to choose a leader upon landing on the island, to make critical decisions for the others and to guide them on how to survive on the island and eventually get rescued. 2.Identify 3 decisions they had to make in order to survive. Why was each important? Answer. Three important decisions that were made for the kids’ survival were… 1. Choosing a leader 2. Picking rules to follow 3. Starting a fire These decisions were important, to the kids’ survival because without a good leader they couldn’t accomplish anything. The type of leader also matters, and what sort of value’s and beliefs he has also matter a lot, for example does he believe that they are going to be rescued or not. That seems to be the contrast between Ralph and Jack. Picking rules to follow is also important, if they didn’t have rules, there would be no order and chaos would reign. As, the children soon realized after landing on the island that they needed clear rules in effect for everybody, much like the rule of law; where no one is above the law. Starting a fire was also, another big decision both for their health and their chances of being rescued. Without a fire soon they boys would lack warmth and light, and lose their good health even faster, also the fire was essential to their rescue their chances of being rescued would be slimmer if they had no fire to send a smoke signal, to a passing air plane.
