Detailed Translation

Introduction

Translation requires many steps that people normally do not think about. ... This makes our ability to program parameters for language translation an even more daunting task—but not one that is (or will be) entirely impossible.
According to some sources, the precision of translations that are handled by computers is sufficient to a certain extent:
…we can say that natural language translation can be achieved with high accuracy in limited domains where small vocabulary and narrow syntactic variety are adequate. In an application where wide vocabulary and syntactic variety are needed, completely automatic natural language translation is far beyond the state of the art. ... There are many difficult meanings and structures behind each language and in order to accomplish a completely accurate translation, they must all be taken into account.
Data
Translation A:
A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. ... (Baker, 27)
Back-Translation (English):
A well-known scientist (some say that it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a lecture on astronomy. ... (Baker, 28)
Systran Translation (Spanish-English):
Un científico bien conocido (algo dice que era Bertrand Russell) dio una vez una conferencia pública en astronomía. ... (Systran, 2003)

Systran Back-Translation (English-Spanish-English):
A known affluent scientist (something says that it was Bertrand Russell) gave once a public conference in astronomy. ... (Systran, 2003)
Analysis
Translation A was constructed to exemplify differences in word equivalencies. ... The Systran machine translator avoided this potential error in translation and produced orbit in the back-translation. There is no way for the translator to be accurate in the back-translation when errors occur in the original translation. ... For instance in the translation, “It described how the Earth moves around in orbit around the sun and how the sun…” the machine could be programmed to delete the first around making the sentence much more sensible.

Translation B:
Feel the force of my fist, frozen fiend! ... (Baker, 76)
Back-Translation (English):
I will make things hot for you, monster!
