... One of Dickinson’s poems called, “I heard a Fly Buzz-when I died,” was written around 1862 and includes one of her most favorite topics, death. ...
In the first stanza the speaker says that she heard a fly buzz as she was dieing. I conclude that the speaker is a she from the innocent, calm and fragile tone of the poem. ... Though the room is quite there is still a fly buzzing around. ... So immediately I picture a dry, cold and suspenseful room full of anticipation. ... ”(Line 7) I get the feeling that there is a stuffiness and sickness in the room. ... The speaker made a will and "Signed away/What portion of me be / Assignable"(line 10,11) and at that moment, she heard the fly. ... The first line reads, “With Blue-uncertain stumbling Buzz-…” She describes the fly’s buzz as a blue uncertainty and when I think of blue I think of cold, death, sorrow, maybe even weak. It is ironic that is the fly, not the hoped-for god or “king”(line 7) they were expecting. Then the fly goes in-between the speaker and the light and the “windows failed”(line 15) and she died and said, “I could not see to see.”(Line 16) It wasn’t till this very part that I just started interpret the poem differently.
