Term limits began as a republican reaction to Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s four elections as president of the United States. ... Implications of term limits vary, and have supporters from both sides of the argument. The powers of highly influential special interest groups are at stake, as are the implications of a national movement to implement term limits. ... Though talked about in the background of the political showground for years, term limits did not make prominent headline news until 1989 when a group of people in Oklahoma began a movement to confine the number of years in office a political member could hold. Proponents of term limits in Oklahoma believed that too many officeholders are in office too long and that political careers are “unhealthy to a representative democracy”.
