The San Francisco Bay Area has been home to my family for almost half a century. The Bay has not only been our home, but also a place where we have experienced triumphs and tribulations. To my family the Bay Area is more than a region of California; it is a place were we celebrate birthdays, Thanksgivings, and Christmases. It is a meeting ground, a central spot, a hide away; it is where all my family comes together. Yet, to fully understand its significance in our family, you must understand our history here. As my grandmother says, “to know were you are, you must know were you came from.” My family’s story begins with the relocation of my grandmother, Dovie White. My grandmother, born to Teresa and Robert Holt, was the second oldest of eight children and the oldest girl in her immediate family. At the age of eleven, her parents decided to move from Oklahoma City to the large state of California where they resided in Los Angeles. This move came about because of the families need for higher education and better job opportunities. While in high school, my grandmother met her future husband and my grandfather, Willie White. Be more specific here. When did they get married? How long did they say in southern California before moving north? After getting married, my grandmother and grandfather moved to the Bay Area because my grandfather was awarded a track scholarship to the University of California, Berkeley.
