The Part the River Played The rivers' involvement played a major role in the devolopment of cities in Louisiana some negative and some positive. The state of Louisiana was once nothing but a huge body of water. Even though many people tend to believe the Mississippi river has been there forever, it is a known fact it didn't exist a million years ago. The river was tremendously increased when drainage was re-routed towards the Mississippi. Out of all the geological factors that shaped the site of the city, it is said that the river played the leading role. The reason why i agree on the fact that the river played the leading role, is because its erratic behavior determined the exact location and dimensions of the city. No matter how you sum it up the river is way more important than most people think. By reading through Beatiful Crescent i found out roles the river played. I never could have imagined this one river could mean so much but it does. According to Joan B. Garvey, "The rivers serpentine course and erratic behavior determined the arteries of transportation and communication.
