Unholy Orders

Unholly Orders The Christian Brothers were an independent sector of the Catholic Church from Ireland. They established an orphanage is Newfoundland as an attempt to aid the devote Catholic followers. The first Irish immigrants arriving in Newfoundland were met with hatred and unfairness. The British would not let them practice their religion and they were forced to meet in vegetable cellars or fishing stages. It was a rough start for the original Brothers at Mount Cashel but they were eventually able to extend their numbers and facilities. The Brothers did not perform holly ritual such as mass or marriage but were totally dedicated to the care of orphans and underprivileged kids. They were inspirational in pushing students to their fullest capability of academic excellence. They faced many problems including a fire that burnt down the entire orphanage costing 200,000 dollars. They only held 60,000 dollars worth of insurance but were assisted by considerable donations from the local community. The enthusiasm for the Brothers from the entire Catholic population resulted in little doubt towards their actions. The members of the clergy and those of high influence in society in Newfoundland were granted unparalleled immunity from the law, allowing them to perform and cover up grotesque and horrific acts of sexual assault and aggression against young intimidated children. The first acts of assault were committed by Father Hickey, a witty, educated, and cosmopolitan man. He began his career as a chaplain at a girls school and was later transferred by request to an all boys school by the name of Brother Rice Regional High School. He was a deceiving man who quoted, “I have very few problems with children.” “I have a lot of problems with adults because all of the things that the youngsters are getting blamed for and perhaps doing, very often are caused by adults... Children do not put up money to bring in the large shipments of drugs, they don’t own stores that sell the filthy magazines, neither do they publish them; that’s the adults...”. Behind the front of understanding stood a different man, a pedophile who took advantage of young boys who put their trust in him. He would invite boys into his presbytery, supply them with alcohol and money and force them into sexual activity. When boys were drowsy after helping themselves to his liquor cabinet Father “Jim” would trick the children into thinking he was giving them a “French Massage” and would lick their body and perform oral sex on them when they were half asleep. One child in a later inquiry stated, “ I was afraid to speak out for fear of pressure from my friends.... Fear of, you know, speaking out against a priest... It was all fear actually speaking out against everybody’s better judgment, and I just didn’t want to be different.”. When investigated he ended up pleading guilty to twenty charges of sexual assault. This was a shock to the Catholic population in Newfoundland, who had put so much trust into the church. A senior citizen responded to the sex scandal, “I perceive the clergy to be a haven for homosexuals and perverts.
