Events of World War II On September 1, 1939, German armies under direct orders of Adolph Hitler launched a surprise attack on Poland. They continued to invade much of Europe as well as Russia throughout most of the year. In response to the threat of further German invasion of devastating effect, Britain declared war on Germany in September 1939. Although the United States remained far from the front lines and had no intention in entering the war, it had no choice when Japan attacked the American naval base in Pearl Harbor in December 1942. The Japanese were victorious in many Pacific battles; however, in May 1942 the US struck back and gained the offensive.
